As a reading intervention teacher working with struggling readers in Tier 3 intervention, Explicit Instruction by Anita Archer has been one of the most impactful professional books I’ve read. This is not a book filled with vague theory or trendy buzzwords. It is practical, research-aligned, and immediately applicable to real classrooms and intervention settings.
What I appreciate most is how clearly Archer breaks down the instructional moves that actually matter for students who need intensive support: modeling, scaffolding, opportunities to respond, pacing, corrective feedback, and cumulative review. The book helped me think more intentionally about how to maximize student engagement and reduce passive time during intervention sessions.
As someone who teaches decoding and structured literacy intervention, I found the emphasis on clear language, systematic routines, and immediate feedback especially valuable. Many struggling readers do not learn incidentally. They need explicit teaching with high levels of teacher clarity and active participation, and this book explains exactly how to do that effectively.
